What legislation & regulations apply to the Volkan 75?
The Volkan 75, like all our incinerators, burns less than 50kg an hour, which means it is classed as 'low-capacity' and as such doesn't require planning permission. No permit is needed for individual use, and the machine is DEFRA-type approved, so all you need to do is fill in one of DEFRA's online forms to let them know you have the machine. As a matter of procedure DEFRA will visit your farm to check that you do have a Waste Spectrum incinerator, and then you will be free to legally use the machine.

How to use the Volkan 75:
The Volkan 75 is loaded via a front door that slides horizontally across to open, allowing easy access from the front, for manual loading at a convenient height. The machine has two burners, and two burn chambers. The ‘main-chamber’ is where carcasses are incinerated. Fumes from this chamber then go to the after chamber to be burnt, at 850 degrees in accordance with DEFRA regulations. The after-chamber has to be heated before the main burn can begin, as the after-burner renders the exhaust fumes environmentally harmless, in accordance with DERRA regulations. Pre-heating the after-chamber typically takes 25 minutes.

After incineration the ashes can be removed via the specially designed ash door at the bottom of the incinerator. Ashes will need to be left to cool before removal, which may take up to10 hours, depending upon the amount of ash and as such we recommend doing this the following day. However emptying the ash chamber is not essential after every burn. Typically 2-3% of the waste will remain as ash.
